Numbers and Symbols typing lessons

Number-row lessons introduce 1 through 0 by finger zone, then apply them to practical values. They cover the main keyboard row; numpad technique is a separate future concern.

These related lessons appear at the levels where the skill is introduced or reinforced. This page is a skill guide, not a separate linear unit.

Keys and fingers

Keep every key tied to one responsibility

1 left pinky; 2 left ring; 3 left middle; 4 and 5 left index. 6 and 7 right index; 8 right middle; 9 right ring; 0, hyphen, and equals right pinky. Shift produces the practised symbols.

What changes

The new skill in this unit

The fingers reach farther than they do for letters, and Shift may be needed for symbols. The hand should still return to its letter-row home position after each reach.

Common mistakes

Notice these before they become habits

  • Leaving the hands parked on the number row after a value.
  • Guessing a shifted symbol without checking the expected character.
  • Assuming number-row practice is the same as dedicated numpad data entry.

Practice plan

Accuracy-first repetition

  1. 1Learn 1–5 and 6–0 as separate zones before mixing them.
  2. 2Type practical values exactly, including punctuation and symbols.
  3. 3Use numbers-and-symbols practice for extra repetition without changing lesson stars.
